By Godfrey Nurse
Best Prepared Speech - Fiona Whytehead
Best Table Topic - Alex
Best Evaluators - Alex Masri
Did you miss the meeting on the 8th March? Well what a night you missed because it was arguably better than the 3D version of Avatar.
David gave an enthusiastic President's introduction, helping to set the atmosphere and tone of the whole meeting and reminded us of the must see competition night occurring on the 22nd March.
Julie was the toastmasters for the day and kept the meeting running smoothly making it look effortless as she moved through the evening with her usual warmth and panache.
Katherine made sure that we knew the importance of keeping on schedule as the time keeper.
The first half of the meeting was steered by Andrew Osbourne with table topics. He came up with a unique idea by selecting a theme based on the fact that it was book week. There were a lot of impersonations and tall stories told. Everyone answered the questions admirably including many guest thanks in some part to the good selection of questions. The table topic winner was Alex.
With the first half of the meeting out of the way we moved unto the prepared speeches.
The first speaker was Fiona Whytehead who gave the president what for with her captivating opening. During the beginning of her speech she demonstrated how it feels to shout and criticise others. Her speech was about how people who shout and criticise others are saying more about themselves than the other person. This serious topic was peppered with good humour and she even had time to imitate a dog. Fiona won the best speaker award.
The next speaker was Alison McIlwaine. She gave as an informative and engaging speech all about sleep. Some of the information such as the effects of alcohol on sleep and the effects on inducing diabetes were new to me. I think most people would agree with her when she said “She would prefer the glass of wine than staying up for 2 nights”.
Steve Maguire gave the last speech. Called Easy Pesy one two three. We were lucky enough to be entertained with an educational speech on how to produce a speech. Steve only prepared for this speech on the day and produced a polished performance that was enjoyable and informative. To show how to prepare a speech Steve had AK47's, Meercats and demonstrated one of his points by absorbing the love and giving it back.
The evaluators for the day were Alex Masri, Robert Hesketh and John Rockel who all gave great feedback for the speakers. The winner of the evaluations was Alex Masri.
The meeting was concluded with Kwame Akpokavi as General Evaluator who gave a dynamic performance. He gave the president David free reign to walk about when giving his address. A point that the president used to good effect in closing the meeting. Kwame what have you done...
