Meeting October 26, 2009
Report by Len Welson
The word for the evening was “Extemporaneous”, meaning something carried out without preparation, unprepared or impromptu.
Our President, David L welcomed everyone and handed over to the Toastmaster for the evening, Christoph R, who presided over a gala evening of stars and speeches.
Table Topics were introduced by Julie, the theme being encounters with celebrities. The roll call included Posh Spice; Elvis; Her Majesty the Queen; Madonna but in the end when the spoils were shared between two guests. Mike, who ran into fellow Yorkshireman David Blunkett and dog in ASDA and Neil on an afternoon at the zoo with Gordon Brown.
After the interval there were four excellent prepared speeches. Fiona W recounted her meeting with her mother in law Sheila who suffers from Altzheimers and her attempts to communicate with her. Next came Robert H, who descibed his various efforts to get out of his comfort zone, on land and sea. Sheri L followed with two Cornish ghost stories specially for Halloween. Finally came Armando A, who gave a very convincing press conference as the CEO of a well known company and had to keep his cool whilst fending off a number of hostile questions during the the Q&A which followed.
The ribbon for Best speaker went to Armando and co-incidentally, his evaluator David O was voted Best Evaluator.
Thanks also to General Evaluator Sean K, who kept a good stance throughout. Sergeant at Arms was Aliki and Timekeeper Nicky ensured that things ran to time.
The red carpet was rolled up and put away by 9.15 pm.
