London Communicators - Meeting Report - Monday 23rd August 2010
Best Table Topic: Michael Smith
Best Evaluator: Sheri Lim
Best Speaker: Michael Smith
As a relatively new member of Toastmasters I found everyone to be very friendly and pleasant and would like to thank everyone for making me very welcome.
The meeting started on time to a brilliant opening by Julie Holness; it was a very captivating and challenging opening, and we were even given homework to think about who we are and what we were about.
Though very nervous I threw myself in at the deep end and agreed to do a table topic, it was nerve wrecking but worth it at the end so I encourage other guests and new members to not hesitate in getting in front of the group as you'll feel much better once you've done it and get some brilliant feedback on what to improve on.
The table topics were about food which was a good choice as it was a complex enough subject for experience speakers to display their skills yet simple enough for a newbie like myself to get their head round on such an impromptu notice.
Aliki was the toastmaster; she did very well and explained each section very well.
The speakers were Nicole Kollerman who taught us the 4 stages of learning according to Maslow, Michael Smith with a speech entitled 'the Stockdale paradox' who educated us on the fact that we should be optimists who take action instead of being blind optimists or pessimists. The final speech was by Len Welson and this was called 'Spinning Wheels', during which he persuaded us on cycling being the cheapest and healthiest way to get to work.
It was a very good night; the speech evaluations were very helpful to not just the speakers but to everyone in the room.
