International Speech and Evaluation Contests, March 22, 2010
Brilliant night with six outstanding speeches that wowed everyone, while much penetrating analysis was on display in the Evaluation contests.
The ever lively and entertaining Steve Maguire was Contest Chair with the effervescent Freddie Daniells as our Chief Judge.
Area 47 Governor Lynne Cantor gave a rousing explanation of why contests are important, as much for the audience as for the contestants.
Speakers were Andrew Osborn on being a DJ with Radio Luxembourg, Robert Hesketh dazzled us with numbers as he urged us to stop drinking bottled water, Jilly Shaul told us to be honest with children about death, Jakub Piezconka explained what to do in case of bank card fraud, and Godfrey Nurse urged us to consider Life outside the Box.
The judges voted Godfrey as the winner with Peter and Jilly in second and third places. For a variety of reason the first and second placed people cannot compete for us in the next round, so we will be represented by the wonderful Jilly.
Mystery speaker Paul Adams spoke about his friendship with Cy Grant, a West Indian who worked to change Brutish attitudes towards black immigrants. The Evaluators were Godfrey Nurse, David Lennon, Jakub Pieczonka and David O'Neill.
The judges chose David L as the winner with David O as runner up.
The winners will be competing against the winners from four clubs in the Area final on Wednesday 31. Wish them luck!
